In fact, Pikmin 3 in particular was all about changing the game for Pikmin in subtle ways. Need berries taken back to the ship? No problem, Wings will take a direct route! But, more importantly, Winged Pikmin opened up new routes and new strategies only available with a flying Pikmin. With Rock Pikmin, it allowed for more dangerous play-styles without fear of being crushed by Wollyhops. They could smash crystals and couldn't be crushed. Rocks didn't cling onto enemies, bouncing off like projectile and allowing for a more rapid fire, one off attack. Even more than Purples and Whites, these dramatically changed the way the game was played. This game introduced two more Pikmin, Rock and Winged Pikmin. In terms of speculation, they aren't as worth highlighting as it seems unlikely caves will return after their absence from Pikmin 3. ![]() This game also featured Bulbmin, who were immune to all elements but we're only available in caves and only appeared if you had less than 100 Pikmin. Purple and Whites greatly changed the way Pikmin was played, with the stunning ability of Purples creating a safer way to fight enemies, and the speed of Whites making them the most optimal Pikmin for carrying low weight things (such as berries). These abilities are hugely different from Reds, Yellows and Blues which mainly just had simple elemental abilities or specialities in certain areas (such as damage or throwing arc). White Pikmin are fast, have x-ray vision, are immune to poison, and can poison enemies if they are eaten. Purple Pikmin are heavy, have a stunning attack, can carry with 10x the strength of any other type. This is where you can see what I mean by the core three following more of a template. This game introduced two cave dwelling Pikmin, Purples and Whites. ![]() Each of these Pikmin can be grown from Onions. These three Pikmin feel like they all follow a template with added features for each (this will make more sense when I cover the other games). One thing which can be noted is that each Pikmin in this game is very basic, setting the core foundations for the series. Red were stronger and fireproof, Yellow had large throwing arcs and could carry bomb rocks, and Blue could go underwater without issue. The original game featured the classic primary trio of Pikmin: Red, Yellow and Blue. I'm mainly going to be talking about the types of Pikmin that could appear in Pikmin 4, but to do so, I'm going to analyse the past games to see if a trend occurs with the types of Pikmin. ![]() With the possibility of Pikmin 4 on the Switch, I'm unbelievably excited for what's to come in the series! Each game has their own unique flair, and I love exploring PNF-404, scouring each corner and managing time and resources as best as I can.
